BEST WEEK EVER? AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE
Was hanging out with my friend (one of the funniest people on the planet) Peter Harrison today - and the news about the Boston Bomb Scare came over the wires (no pun intended) ... We both stood in awe and shock over what is definitely the most successful advertising campaign in recent history. But what of the fallout? The cops already have their Oswald, but surely something else must be done to curb this flagrant use of LED electronics. And to quote the great 1940s smut writer named Anonymous, "If not something, then what!"
Soon Peter and I came up with a joke, which I have to share - essentially:
"Just watch, because of this, Lite Brite will be deemed a Schedule I Substance by morning..." |
Funny to consider, but with this sort of ridiculous thing happening, who the hell really knows.
It's important then, to make the following important statement:
THIS IS NOT A BOMB!
We await morning.
Thank you - editors, www.ep.tc

New issue of
COMICS WITH PROBLEMS posted
Issue Number Thirteen:
THE INCREDIBLE COMING
OF CAPTAIN AL COHOL
This is one we debated about either posting as its own stand-alone feature (like HOOKED), or including in the Comics With Problems series. We ended up thinking it would be a perfect cold weather January issue, so Problems won out.
"Capt Al Cohol" is a favorite, and clearly a little hard to believe, but here it is. And what a weird reason for existing. Produced by the Canadian govt for distribution to Inuits (derogatorily referred to as Eskimos) in the Northwest Territories. This might be the only 1970s government comic book about a recovering space alien alcoholic. I know of nothing else this far out in theme (or any theme, even) specifically targetting Inuits as an intended audience. Talk about an eyebrow raiser. Wonderful art, too.
This is the first issue of Capt Al Cohol, complete with local ads and origin. Click to read.
Who knows, also, maybe the creators of He-Man were actually problem drinkin Inuits. We can only speculate, but damn is the likeness amusing, and pre-dates the Mattel toy line by close to a decade.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM EP.TC
Last year we gave you the AA comic strips as a Holiday Thank You. We're going to try and make this a yearly thing, purposefully holding off on some really good items until the holidays.
For Dec 06, Here are Your Four Gifts:
Gift #1 - TWO POODLE CARTOONS
This is the finished and final edit for the two animated pieces from POODLE SAMIZDAT. Instructions removed and re-edited into a standalone set of cartoons. We hired voice talent, scripted up a new animated introduction and generally tightened the whole thing up as far as it could go. Now it's nothing but jokes. And great jokes as half the cast are powerless and disgraced political losers (finally)
Offered here is a downloadable high quality file (while bandwidth supplies last - add a mirror if you can) and a link to Google Video. Thank you and Please distribute.
Special thanks and regards to the inimitable William McDougal for his performance as the announcer.

Gift #2 - 1949 CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL FUNDRAISER COMIC STRIPS
If you enjoyed last year's Alcoholics Anonymous strips, or July's How To Spot a Jap, then this is the item for you. These are 100% unknown. Used in door-to-door fundraising for the Children's Medical Center in Boston MA during the Christmas Season in 1949.
Describing these amazing comic strips might sound like I'm uttering an offensive joke, but in the most matter of fact way: This is a complete set of eight comic strips about children with cancer, mental retardation, polio, low birth weight, bad blood, facial deformities, head trauma, and speech impediments. No, seriously. Purposefully held back until the holidays. Beats the shit out of Oliver Twist. Enjoy.

Gift #3 - A DOG AND HIS ELEPHANT
225 Pages - Now Free
We've decided to offer our DOG AND HIS ELEPHANT story for free. Produced from 2002-2003, and winner of a 2003 SXSW Festival Web Award, this is the story of Eleanor and Frank. Posted along with this is a very appreciated essay on the comic from the Webcomics Examiner. Our thanks go to the many of you who paid the $1.50 to read the comic over the past few years. Read it now for free:

And Finally ----
Gift #4 - Holiday issue of
COMICS WITH PROBLEMS
It really wouldn't be the Holidays without Charlie Brown and Lucy, so in that spirit here's a very special COMICS WITH PROBLEMS starring Peanuts. The title is SECURITY IS AN EYE PATCH and this is a government comic about Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) with a genuinely bizarre title - and actually drawn by Charles Schulz. Probably the only public domain (govt piece) item that Schulz ever made. Great Pumpkin indeed!

Late November 2006 UPDATE
JFK Pre-Assassination 1961 US EMBASSY COMIC BOOK
Here's a scarce one. I should preface this by saying I have a strange kind of personal interest with John F Kennedy. I was born on November 22, on the eleventh anniversary of his assassination (11 22 11), and, given that sort of numeric oddness, I always try to find some interesting Kennedy item whenever I can. With that as an introduction - let me say, "It's that time of year again!" - and so for November 22 here's the rarest Kennedy item I know of - a comic book distributed to US Embassies right after he was elected. Serving as an introduction to the english-speaking world, this comic recounts JFK's life up to the 1961 present.
Similar to our previously posted Martin Luther King comic, this was meant to establish the myth and story of Kennedy right as the image was still forming.
There have been a few post-mortem Kennedy comics, but this is one of the few (if the only) that was created to introduce JFK, instead of grieve him or profit from his death. This one reads like the awkward happy half of an unfinished film. Many weird panels. For example:
tick tick ...
And then there's the last image from the back cover:
Happy to point out not even the JFK library knows about this comic - nor have I ever seen it listed in any JFK collection or exhibit.
Well, Enjoy -- We have some good things planned for December, too -- Ethan
