NEWS: Ralph Steadman and Tim Robbins reading for upcoming and previously unknown recording of The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved (see below)
October 14 2009:
LEAD ITEM: "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PARIS RECORDS"
Pleased to mention we had the good opportunity to write for Evergreen this month. Flew up to Dallas to interview Michael Minzer, founder of a very interesting recording project called Paris Records. This is the first published account of the label's entire history - which includes such classic work as Allen Ginsberg's THE LION FOR REAL and William S Burrough's DEAD CITY RADIO. But that's just the surface of things. Click for news of dead bodies, Terry Southern's last work, Gregory Corso on morphine, Michael O'Donoghue's Boulevard of Broken Balls, Jeff Buckley drowning and a lot of music business gossip. Also, if we can sweeten things further, two mp3s of out of print music: Ginsberg singing William Blake and Kathy Acker's rendition of Savage's School For Girls.
It was a real honor to talk with Michael at such length. As well as sample Hal Willner, a first I think. Even better, during the conversation news of an upcoming album came out. And since it's a scoop I don't mind promoting: Exclusive news in the article is details on an spoken record recording of THE KENTUCKY DERBY IS DECADENT AND DEPRAVED with Ralph Steadman playing himself and Tim Robbins (aka thank god it's not Johnny Depp) playing Hunter Thompson.
NEXT UP, four new issues added to The Realist. Archive now holds 103 issues. This month: Issue 5, 95, 132 and 141. Of historic note here is issue 95, first issue of Mae Brussell's Conspiracy Newsletter.
Additonally, Paul just spoke on C-SPAN for a segment of Book TV. Great appearance! Click to view
Item Three: Our contribution to World Hatred. Well, we figured our contribution to World Peace (see March 2008 article) was due for a Banker's Correction. Not that this is surprising, but our 2006 posting and hosting of "How To Spot a Jap" has found its way into the heart of Anti-Japanese Chinese blogs. We've sort of known this through traffic logs for a while but here's news:
NIKKEI VIEW: Chinese bloggers, media resurrect 1942 racist US Army booklet (link)
As I reacted when I read these, I Can Has a Whoops!
Incidentally, there are no plans to remove the content from the site. I do find it an interesting continuation of the story "things go places when you post", though.
Obligatory: Only appropriate, given the site's content, that we post this Youtube entitled "1976 Swine Flu Propaganda" The message from the second segment (30 seconds in): DON'T KISS WOMEN!! (I joke, the obvious message is don't kiss men with mustaches.)
Final Item: What better than ethnic intolerance (China) and then pig illness (Swine!) to introduce our closing act, the music of Hi-Caliber. As I reacted when our roving correspondent Laura McD passed this along, "Wow, It's like CIA mind control rap!"
From Glen Beck's 9/12 event. Which by that I hear only nine or twelve people showed up. You can count about half in the crowd. I especially like the onstage sign language for accessibility. Here's a middle finger. Ah, that's too hostile. Here's a goose.
