LARRY CRAIG MASK UPDATE

As promised in the Realist post below, we had some good success with the Larry Craig mask. Here's a minor listing of some places it went, what was said, etc.

First, an appreciation and thank you to BoingBoing and Air America for the earliest mentions.

(Larry mask is discussed at 1:40)
video embedded below, permanent link (youtube)

Washington D.C. papers, POLITICO and ROLL CALL each had a brief piece on the mask. ROLL CALL is the paper that first leaked (no pun intended) the Larry Craig sex scandal - so it was a great and bizarre feeling to be covered by them. They interviewed us and ran a full page headline on page 20 entitled, "ARTISTS HOPE FOR PLENTY OF HALLOWEEN LARRY CRAIGS"

(click for full size)

Who reads ROLL CALL? Since 1955 a copy of the paper has been delivered each day free of charge to every member of the Senate and House, as well as their entire staff and related aids (11,500 total copies) - and also with 400 free copies directly to the White House. In its article ROLL CALL printed our URL. So if you're a member of Congress or a part of the Presidential Cabinet, Hi, welcome to the site. And especially, Hi Larry.

POLITICO is the free paper distributed throughout all of D.C. They printed the URL as well (thank you) and ran their coverage with the equally appreciated headline of HALLOWEEN: EVERYONE'S EXCUSE TO DRESS SLUTTY

AND NO NEWS IS NEWS WITHOUT YOUR
MOST TRUSTED LOCAL NEWS TEAM

But to pick a winner, we're most delighted with coverage on Larry's own BOISE IDAHO ABC Channel 6 affiliate, KIVI! Larry Craig's Idaho constituency! TRUSTED LOCAL NEWS! THEY'RE HOLDING THE BAG RIGHT UP TO CAMERA! See the 6pm team discussing the mask inbetween spots on weather and the KIVI-TV's drive-home traffic report. Note the Larry website on the computer screen in the background.

On the web, it was very appreciated and cool to see coverage from a number of gay sites, including the political Towelroad site (link) and gossip's Perez Hilton. Perez calls the mask "jizztastic". Other coverage included Dan Savage, mention on a gay podcast and an article in TETU who might have the greatest subhead imaginable, "Le Magazine des Gays et des Lesbiennes". I love French.

Coverage also from THE HUFFINGTON POST (link) and the DAILY SHOW'S INDECISION 2008 (link) - which was a little odd on our senses as both combine to be part of our morning cup of blog coffee. The Huffington Post kept the mask on the front of their main POLITICS page for the entire day. CNET's Crave Gadget blog as well.

a nice second or two here:

Local radio. When visiting new cities it should always be a priority to find the local talk station and just sort of simmer in its oddness for a bit. If you don't listen to local talk you're missing out on sound effects, forced laughter, staged gaffs and a rotissery of prepared news items. So the finest feeling came from having the Larry Craig mask discussed on all varieties of strange airwaves. Here's a few AM and FM stations who covered the Larry mask:

pardon the noise

and lastly, it wouldn't be a success if there weren't actual people dressed out on the town as Larry. In the week before Halloween there were over 75,000 downloads of the mask from the site with a likely double or triple of that amount through other shared means. Here are a few photos we found on Flickr of Larry's out on the town:

A Realist Update #6

Sixth month into The Realist Archive Project. We now have a permanent archive for over twenty full issues of the magazine, all free for your enjoyment. This month adds four new issues, including a report on a bombed Buddhist mission from 1959, a great piece on 1965 censorship entitled The Esthetic Rebels, some vintage Robert Anton Wilson about raising your kids without Santa Claus, and this jaw dropping kick of a drug comic by Paul Krassner and Dick Guindon from 1972 entitled Rosemerica's Baby:

Also added is a new Supplement to the archive, this one being a full page ad on Krassner from a 1975 issue of OUI Magazine, entitled PAUL KRASSNER LIES--SOMETIMES.

We had a great success with the Larry Craig mask and will be posting a short bit on that in a few days along with some other news items. Thanks to everyone who visited the Larry Craig page, downloaded a mask, told others, etc.
